Kingsley House, once a Rectory, and then a Deanery, before becoming a private house, was always closely associated with the adjacent Church of St Mary and St Alkelda, built in the 13th century. The Medieval Rectory became the Deanery of the Collegiate body to which Middleham Church was elevated in 1477 by Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later crowned Richard III. That College lapsed, but it was re-established in 1814, and one of its more famous canons was Charles Kingsley, after whom the House is named. Charles Kingsley, born in Holne, Devon on 12th June 1819, was the elder son of the Reverend Charles Kingsley and his wife Mary, spending his early years at Clovelly, Devon where his father was Curate. Charles Kingsley, the younger, was educated at Bristol Grammar School and Helston Grammar School before attending King's College London. He then moved to Magdalene College, Cambridge where he graduated in 1842. He became a Church of England priest, ministering at St Mary's Church, Eversley, Hampshire, but in 1860 he became University Professor of Modern History in Cambridge, where he remained until 1869. He was an historian, poet and novelist; became friendly with Charles Dickens, sharing with him a great passion to bring about social reform. Kingsley loved the wonderful countryside around Middleham and was made an honorary Canon of the Deanery and, in 1873, was also made a Canon of Westminster. He is most warmly remembered as the author of The Water Babies, a fairy tale loved by many, providing a heart wrenching story of the plight of children forced to become chimney sweeps at a young age. Charles Kingsley first produced it between 1862 and 1863 as a serial for a magazine before publishing it in its entirety in 1863. Its protagonist, Tom, falls into a river after encountering an upper-class girl named Ellie. He appears to have drowned, but is transformed into a water-baby. Charles Kingsley died on 23rd January 1875 aged 55, and was buried in St Mary's Church, Eversley where he had ministered for a prolonged period.

October 1956-1972 Melton Avril Vasey
Melton Avril Vasey, born on 4th April 1906 in Doncaster, was the son of Fred Melton Vasey and came from a racing family steeped in history, his grandfather also trained, as did his uncle Peter. Avril was a professional jumps jockey from 1923 until 1934, partnering his first winner, Son O'Lomond, at Leicester on 19th February 1924. A remarkable incident happened in the 1929 Scottish Grand National at Bogside when he rode Donzelon which fell at the water jump and Avril was knocked out; he would surely have drowned had Bilbie Rees not fallen at the same water jump and rescued him. After hanging up his riding boots in 1934 he assisted his father Melton who was training at Belle Vue, Doncaster, and when his father died in early 1952 Avril took over the licence. However, in July 1952 he received a letter from F Weatherby, Secretary of the Jockey Club, instructing him, and 4 other trainers, that their licence would not be renewed in 1953 unless they vacated the stables. The Jockey Club decreed that no trainer could train from racecourse stables on a permanent basis, and that Town Moor stables would have to be vacated. During his time in Doncaster Avril, a keen golfer, was Captain of the Town Moor Golf Club for 3 seasons. Avril had to search around for new stables, and transferred his string from Woodborough House, Belle Vue to Ferrngill, Middleham in October 1952. He hit the ground running, landing his first winner from his new stables in November 1952 when British Paragon won the Consolation Plate at Manchester. In October 1953 Avril celebrated the engagement of his 3rd daughter, Patricia, to jump jockey Peter Chisman, the happy couple marrying early in 1954. Also, in 1953 Mr G Munro's Tangram notched up a sequence of 4 wins, 4 of the 26 wins Avril enjoyed that season, and ran credibly in the 1954 Lincoln Handicap partnered by stable jockey Stan Clayton. In 1954 Mr Arthur Hughes' Whitebrigg ran up a sequence of 4 consecutive handicap wins, culminating in the Great St Wilfrid Handicap at Ripon. In his 3 full seasons at Ferngill he trained 32, 28 and 23 horses, but always thought that there was the potential to train more, so in 1956 he moved to Kingsley House Stables where he enjoyed success in some high profile races.

His best horses throughout his training career were Janeat, Zardia, Sovereign Supreme, Aunt Agnes, Shirley Pat, Wiljotar and Shotley Mill. In 1962 he won the prestigious Ayr Gold Cup with Janeat 25/1 rewarding jockey Brian Henry for his loyalty when he could have moved to Newmarket. In 1967 he captured the Free Handicap at Newmarket with Sovereign Supreme, and also won two Northern Free Handicaps. In 1968 he won the Manchester November Handicap at Doncaster with Zardia 25/1. During his time at Kingsley House he began training a string of 21 horses, but by 1965 it had grown to 36 horses. He retired for personal reasons in 1972 and died on 12th March 1986 aged 79.

1973-1976 Ken Payne
Ken Payne, born in 1937, was initially nicknamed 'window pane' because he made his money from his window cleaning business, but he gained fame and notoriety during the decade he trained in England, based mainly in Middleham, Yorkshire. Throughout that period he was the scourge of most bookmakers, often entering multiple horses in selling races, making it difficult for bookmakers to form a market because they were unaware which horse was the stable fancy. His nicknamed changed to 'selling race king' and many celebrities of the day, including singers Max Bygraves and Frankie Vaughan, and Liverpudlian boxer John Conteh, counted him amongst their friends. As well as training many selling platers, he also trained quality horses, notably Kithairon and Gay Charmaine; indeed, at his height he trained more than 120 horses per season. In February 1972 he moved from Romsey, near Southampton, to Berkeley House Stables, Upper Lambourn, recently purchased by Mr Edward Lal, a Jamaican businessman and property developer who spent over £80,000 (equivalent in 2023 to £1 million) on racehorses in just one year, with a view to them forging a successful racing career in England before being exported to Jamaica as quality bloodstock. In his brief time at Berkeley House Payne trained Alarm Call, Creperama and Le Lion which, between them, had cost over £26,000. At the end of 1972 Ken Payne, having made an application to extend the number of stables at Berkeley House, moved to Middleham, taking over from M Avril Vasey who had retired after spending 2 decades in Middleham, initially at Ferngill, but later transferring to Kingsley House. In 1976 Payne's 3-year-old son Nathan was tragically killed in a farm accident leaving him so depressed that he attempted suicide, and was taken to Northallerton Hospital on Thursday 21st October 1976 where he was critically ill for some time. In November 1976 the Jockey Club withdrew his licence to train, particularly after Payne had allegedly sold 2 racehorses which did not belong to him in late October 1976. He was forced to give up training, was declared bankrupt and travelled to America to train, later attempting to rekindle his career in Western Australia, although his application for a trainer's licence was rejected. It was left to his Head Lad, Ken Mitchard, to dispose of the 80 horses in Kingsley House at the time of Payne's troubles, dispatching them to numerous stables around England, the stables remaining empty until Steve Nesbitt purchased them in October 1977.

October 1977-January 1982 Steve Nesbitt
Steve Nesbitt, born 20th October 1930, rode on the Flat for a number of years, but it was as a trainer that he really made his mark. He launched his training career in 1966 at Diggle, close to Oldham, but transferred to Newby Hall, near Ripon in 1968. He married Myra and their marriage was blessed with 5 children, David, who rode over the jumps, Arthur, who rode on the Flat, and 3 daughters, Carol, Lynne and Tracey. In 1968 Steve was joined by George Moore, a jockey from Devon who had spent the previous year riding for David Williams, whose son Ian went on to become a successful trainer, and George became an integral part of the Nesbitt team, especially after he married Steve and Myra's daughter Carol. In early 1977 it became clear to Steve that he could no longer continue at Newby Hall as the owners wanted to convert the land into a shopping area, meaning Steve was keen to find new premises. In October 1977 Steve bought Kingsley House and stables for £43,000, outbidding Glasgow House trainer Tommy Fairhurst. Steve realised the historic importance of Kingsley House, where Ken Payne had recently trained, but before him Avril Vasey. Steve brought a string of 25 horses with him from Ripon, and hoped to increase that to 50 within the first year. His best horses whilst in Newby Hall and Middleham were the talented, but sometimes savage, Ubedizzy, Clear Melody, Red Earl, Prew, Ingham and Morgan’s Pride. Morgan's Pride 20/1 won the 1968 Great St Wilfrid Handicap at Ripon by 5 lengths for Steve's wife Myra when ridden by apprentice David Coates, who had an unforgettable day because he also won on Pravona 20/1 to land a 440/1 double, whilst Clear Melody won the 1976 Stewards Cup at Nottingham. Steve was a dual-purpose trainer, sending out talented chaser Red Earl to win the 1978 Charisma Records Gold Cup at Kempton. Despite all of those successes, Steve will best be remembered as the trainer of Ubedizzy, owned by Edinburgh publican John Finlayson, a speedy sprinter with undoubted talent, but with a notoriously bad attitude, attacking his lads, savaging handlers in the unsaddling enclosure at Newmarket after coming second behind Boldboy in the 1978 Abernant Stakes, and biting the finger off of his groom Andy Crook, who later became a trainer in Middleham. Notwithstanding his undoubted ability, he won the 1976 William Hill Sprint at York and was fourth in the 1977 Nunthorpe Stakes also at York, but such was his reputation that he was banned from running in the UK and was sold to a stable in Sweden where he continued to race, becoming their champion sprinter. Steve was well-liked around Middleham and very popular on the racecourse, so it was a shock to all when he was diagnosed with a terminal illness and sadly died at Kingsley House on Friday 22nd January 1982 aged just 51.

His life was a beautiful memory for his close family and all racegoers, his absence from Middleham and the northern racecourses a silent grief. His wife, Myra, took over the licence so that training could continue at Kingsley House, and Ripon marked his memory with a race in his honour, the Steve Nesbitt Nursery Handicap and Challenge Trophy first run in August 1982, initially over 1 mile, then extended to 1 mile 4 furlongs, then reduced to 1 mile 2 furlongs before settling on 6 furlongs. It's final running was in 2006 when won by Soviet Palace, after which the race was named in honour of Billy Nevett.

January 1982-1984 Myra Nesbitt
After husband Steve's sad, untimely death on 22nd January 1982 the licence was taken over by Myra, who was ably supported by son-in-law George Moore, daughter Carol, and her other children, Arthur, Lynne, Tracey and David. During her two seasons as a trainer, Myra's best horse was Mary Maguire, named after an Australian actress, born in 1937, who became a Hollywood film star, the horse winning races in 1982, 1983 and 1984. At the end of 1984 Myra passed the licence on to son-in-law George Moore who trained, with the support of wife Carol, at Kingsley House for two seasons before transferring to Warwick Lodge in 1986, a place which they later purchased in 1993. Kingsley House was then bought by Mark Johnston, and it has proved to be a record breaking training establishment ever since, famous well beyond the confines of Middleham.

November 1984-1986 George Moore
Devon born former jockey George Moore spent a year working in Devon for Billy Williams, father of present day trainer Ian Williams, as soon as he hung up his riding boots, but then made his way to Yorkshire to join the yard of Steve Nesbitt, his wife Myra and their daughter Carol, training at Newby Hall near Ripon in 1968. He continued to ride work for Steve and assisted him even when Steve transferred to Kingsley Park, Middleham in October 1977. He married Carol and the pair worked at Kingsley Park right up to the time of Steve's untimely death on 22nd January 1982, and when Steve's wife, and Carol's mother, Myra took over the licence for 2 years, the pair continued to support Myra. In November 1984 Myra decided to hand the licence over to son-in-law George, enabling him to launch his training career. In 1983 George Dawes and his wife Elaine had won £756,325.90 on Littlewoods pools and in due course George Dawes purchased Kingsley House, installing George Moore as trainer. Dawes and his wife formed a company called Victoryroll Ltd which enabled racing enthusiasts to rent a horse at the stable for £150 a week. One such horse was Newmarket Sausage which, in February 1985, was rented by Peter Caselli, and the combination provided George Moore with his first winner at Sedgefield in the Ryhope Novice Hurdle on Friday 8th February 1985. Moore must have believed the game was easy, because the very next day he landed his second winner in as many days when Excavator Expert won the Bridge Hotel Selling Hurdle at Catterick. In the 1985-86 jumps season Micky Hammond was offered a job as a stable lad in Kingsley Park by George Dawes on the understanding that he would be offered a few rides. On only his second ride for Dawes Micky partnered Tophams Tavern to victory at Market Rasen in the Gainsborough Maiden Hurdle, the first of 4 consecutive wins which the horse enjoyed between August and October 1985. In his first full season at Kingsley Park Moore trained a string of 29 horses, and in 1986 it increased to 33, but Dawes' business model was insecure and towards the end of 1986 he filed for bankruptcy, enabling Moore to move to nearby Warwick Lodge to train a string of 37 in his first year at his new stables, but leaving Kingsley Park empty until Mark Johnston made a successful offer for it in November 1988.

November 1988-December 2021 Mark Johnston
Mark Johnston was born on 10th October 1959 at Bellshill Maternity Hospital, Glasgow, third child and first son of Ron and Mary Johnston, who both worked as Steward and Stewardess for the British Overseas Airline Corporation before Ron later worked in Hotels. Arriving before him were his sisters Lyn and Sharon, and from his early years Mark showed a keen interest in animals, so it was no surprise that he took a seven-year veterinary degree at Glasgow University, and would be followed about 3 decades later by his son Charlie, who chose the same degree at the same seat of learning.
On 8th June 1985 Mark married Deidre (nee Ferguson) who he had been dating since she was 15, so when they had both completed their education and degrees it seemed a logical next step to get married at Brig O'Turk church near Aberfoyle. Deidre began teaching while Mark put his veterinary degree to good use, and the couple were later blessed with two sons, Charlie and Angus. In the autumn of 1986 Mark launched his training career with 12 horses at Bank End Stables, North Somercotes near Louth in Lincolnshire. More often than not his gallops took place on the nearby beach, and it was not until 1st July 1987 that he got his inaugural winner, Hinari Video at Carlisle for owner Brian Palmer and main work rider Bobby Elliott. It was to be his only winner in that first season. He formed a business partnership with Brian Palmer and the pair began their search for more suitable stables, noticing that the vacant stables at Kingsley House in Middleham were available. The stables, with 39 boxes, had, at one time, been owned by Ken Payne before he became bankrupt, and then were owned by Steve and Myra Nesbitt, although Steve tragically died at a young age. In 1983 George Dawes had won £756,000 on the pools and had purchased Kingsley House and stables, installing George Moore as his trainer, but that hadn't ended well when Dawes filed for bankruptcy. In November 1988 Johnston, backed by partner Brian Palmer, purchased Kingsley House for £162,500 and brought his horses and head lad Declan Condell with him from Lincolnshire. It was a partnership with Palmer which was to last until 2001 when Johnston was able to buy him out. From just a single winner in 1987, Johnston notched up 5 wins in 1988; 15 in 1989 from a string of 18; 28 in 1990 from a string of 35; and 31 in 1991 from a string of 35, and he was able to increase the boxes at Kingsley House to 67. In 1989 he won the Portland Handicap at Doncaster with Craft Express owned by Mrs V G Rowland and ridden by Bobby Elliott. The year 1992 was an important year for Johnston, 53 winners from his string of 39 horses, landing his first Ascot winner with Marina Park, and also cementing links with owner Ron Huggins who owned Double Blue which won 4 races in just 23 days in April. Numbers continued to increase, 39 in 1992, 49 in 1993, 72 in 1994, 95 in 1995 and 117 in 1996, and with the increasing numbers came an increasing total of winners, 77 in 1993 and breaking through the century barrier in 1994 with 117 winners. Between 1991 and 1996 Branston Abbey won no less than 25 races, while star handicapper Star Rage won a record 9 handicaps in a single season in 1994. Johnston also won the 1992 Ebor Handicap with Quick Ransom, but until 1994 a Classic win had eluded him.
That all changed in 1994 when Mister Baileys (SR 2004), owned by Paul Venner of Baileys Horse Feeds captured the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket at the rewarding odds of 16/1. Up to that point, when Johnston had needed extra boxes he had rented 20 from Chris Thornton at Spigot Lodge, but on the back of Mister Baileys success Johnston was able to purchase Warwick House, just across the road from Kingsley House, for £240,000 from Patrick Haslam who moved to Manor House Stables. This added an additional 75 boxes, bringing the total to 142, and enabled Johnston to turn Warwick House into a hub for his 2-year-olds as well as providing much needed accommodation for his increasing number of staff. Also, in 1994 Johnston captured the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle with Quick Ransom. Ron Huggins continued to be a lucky owner, owning Double Trigger who won the 1995 Ascot Gold Cup, Mark Johnston's first Royal Ascot success, followed just 3 races later by his second Royal Ascot winner when Diaghilef won the King George V Stakes at 40/1. Double Trigger also won that years Goodwood Cup and Doncaster Cup, and Ron Huggins gained further success shortly afterwards with Double Eclipse. Also, in 1995 Mark Johnston released another exceptional 2-year-old, Bijou D'Inde, meaning Jewel of India, which won the Acomb Stakes at York on his third outing, following up in the Futurity Stakes at The Curragh, and all seemed set for a promising Classic campaign in 1996. Like Mister Baileys two years before, Bijou D'Inde was sent straight to Newmarket for the 2000 Guineas, and like Mister Baileys the horse was involved in a close finish with a Frankie Dettori ridden horse, Mark of Esteem. In a close 3-way struggle with Mark of Esteem and Even Top, Bijou D'Inde was third, beaten a head and a neck. He gained some compensation at Royal Ascot in the St James's Palace Stakes when getting the better of Mark of Esteem. In 2000, some 13 years after starting his training career, Mark Johnston landed his 1000th winner, appropriately enough with Double Honour at Hamilton on 4th September 2000, becoming the quickest trainer to reach such a milestone. In 2001 he bought out Brian Palmer, while in 2003 he purchased the 260 acre Park Farm, a former dairy farm owned by brothers Peter and Tony Walton, and began to transform it into Kingsley Park. In 2008 Johnston built all-weather gallops at a cost of around £600,000 on Kingsley Park after difficulties on the Middleham Moor gallops due to dangers from sheep on common grazing land.

They were completed in 2009 and he was able to dispense with Middleham Moor gallops, adding an equine swimming pool and water walker, and making the Kingsley Park site the hub of Johnston racing. Son Charlie, his assistant, was able to move into a house on Kingsley Park. Having first landed a century of winners in 1994, when Bandari won the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York in 2002 Mark Johnston equalled Henry Cecil's record of having achieved a century of winners for 9 consecutive seasons. It was a record he broke the very next year. In 2004 Mark claimed his second English Classic when Attraction (SR 1926), owned by the Duke of Roxburghe, won the 1000 Guineas, following up in the Irish 1000 Guineas a few weeks later, the first filly to ever win both races, and confirming her superiority in the Coronation Stakes at the Royal meeting. Mark had taken 13 years to reach the 1000th winner milestone, but just eight years later, on 4th February 2008, he reached 2000 winners with Leamington, owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum and ridden by Greg Fairley, in the Pontins Handicap at Southwell. Having achieved a century of winners for 15 consecutive seasons in 2008, in 2009 he became the first trainer to break through the 200 winner mark on the Flat, ending the year with 221 wins. Just 5 years later he reached 3000 winners on 5th April 2013 when Birdy Boy, owned by Frank Bird and ridden by Franny Norton, won the 32Red Bingo Handicap at Wolverhampton. Between 1998 and 2013 Mark won the Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket on 3 occasions, firstly in 1998 with Spirit of Love, secondly in 2004 with Contact Dancer at 16/1, and finally in 2013 with Scatter Dice at the rewarding odds of 66/1. The 4000th winner only took just over 4 years, reaching that milestone on 23rd October 2017 with the appropriately named Dominating at Pontefract. Up to that point Richard Hannon senior was the leading Flat race trainer of all time with 4193 winners, but on 23rd August 2018 Mark bettered that when Poets Society won the Clipper Logistics Handicap at York for the Kingsley Park 9 syndicate, rewarding Mark with the record breaking 4194 winners. At the end of the 2021 season Mark announced that he and Charlie would become joint holders of the trainers licence, so, in theory, the total winners arrow reverted to zero, but in practice Mark Johnston reached the magic 5000 winner mark on 24th August 2022 at Kempton with Dubai Mile, and in December 2022 Mark announced that he would be stepping down, leaving son Charlie as the sole licence holder, bringing to a close a remarkable training career. Reflecting back on his career in terms of English Classic successes, he won the 1994 2000 Guineas with Mister Baileys and the 2004 1000 Guineas with Attraction, whilst his best placed finish in the Derby was in 2018 with Dee Ex Bee 20/1 who was second, beaten a length and a half by Masar (SR 1944). His best placed finish in the Oaks was in 2010 with Bikini Babe who finished 7th beaten thirteen and a half lengths by Snow Fairy (SR 1849), while his best placed finish in the St Leger came in 2019 when Sir Ron Priestley was second behind the very smart Logician (SR 2063). Throughout his 35 years as a trainer Mark's motto was 'Always Trying' but could just as easily have been 'So often winning'. When the top Middleham trainer Matthew Dobson Peacock died a century ago, at his funeral a Duke who had been one of his owners said 'he was rightly regarded as the doyen of his profession.' A century later that comment applies to Mark Johnston.

January 2022-December 2022 Charlie & Mark Johnston
At the start of 2022 Mark and Charlie took out a joint licence to share the training responsibilities, Charlie having served as assistant to his father for a number of years. The team continued to win Group and Listed races, notably the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud at Saint-Cloud with Dubai Mile. Living Legend won a valuable Conditions race at Newcastle in addition to the Listed Magnolia Stakes at Kempton and the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket for owners Barbara & Alick Richmond. Although technically the win counter was reset to zero once they began training on a dual licence, Mark Johnston passed the magic 5000th winner milestone on 24th August 2022 when Dubai Mile won at Kempton. After notching up 176 winners during the season, in December 2022 Mark decided to retire and hand the licence completely over to Charlie, marking the end of a glittering, record breaking career. Their final winner was Asdaa on 28th December 2022 at Newcastle, and it is probably fitting that the same horse should provide Charlie with his first winner at Kempton just a week later.

January 2023-present Charlie Johnston
Charlie Johnston, eldest son of Deidre and Mark Johnston, was born in Middleham on 4th October 1990. Although he was always likely to take over from his father when the time came, nevertheless, Charlie and his parents thought it prudent to gain his degree first. He followed in his father's footsteps by gaining a veterinary degree at Glasgow University and shortly afterwards began working at Kingsley House. Charlie was assistant to Mark for a number of years and moved into a house on Kingsley Park, the main hub of the training estate. For a single year, 2022, Mark and Charlie held a dual licence, but on 1st January 2023 Charlie, at the age of 32, took over the full licence. It seems only right that their last winner as dual trainers was Asdaa at Newcastle on 28th December 2022, and that Charlie's first winner was the same horse exactly a week later at Kempton.
